Living in Turks and Caicos Islands

Home Living in Turks and Caicos Islands

Living in the Caribbean is a special kind of lifestyle – one of luxury, filled with amazing sunsets and perpetual warmth − a lifestyle different from any other.

With an average temperature of 82°F or about 28°C, the weather is nearly always perfect for any kind of outdoor or watersport activity. The annual range in temperature is from 75°F to 95°F (24°C to 35°C), with the cooler months falling between November and April, and May through October being the warmer months.

The Islands receive approximately 33 inches of rain annually, but don’t let that number mislead you. Sunshine is the predominate factor most of the time, with the majority of the rain falling on just a few occasions in late summer.

All of that sunshine can be enjoyed while visiting one of the TCI’s abundant white sand beaches. The turquoise waters that surround the islands are brimming with sea life that can be easily viewed by wading out a short distance from shore with snorkeling gear. Grace Bay Beach on the north shore of Providenciales was recently once again voted the number one beach in the world, and is host to a large barrier reef that keeps the waters calm and provides a home to colorful marine life. For the more adventurous travelers, scuba and fishing charters are available, as well as jet ski, paddle board, kayak, and kite surfing rentals.

Personal safety is a highly influential factor when assessing quality of life in any location. Among Caribbean nations, Turks and Caicos is considered to be one of the safest of countries.

How to get to Turks and Caicos, Transportation

Travelers can get to the TCI via private plane, cruise ship, or yacht. But the most common method of travel is commercial airliner. The Turks and Caicos Islands are a short direct flight from many cities in the U.S. (e.g. Atlanta, Boston, Charlotte, Chicago, Dallas, Ft. Lauderdale, Houston, Miami, New York, Newark, Philadelphia) as well as Canada (Toronto, Montreal) and Providenciales International Airport is served by several international carriers, making travel to and from the islands easy.

Once you’ve made it to Providenciales, ferries, charters, and domestic flights can get you to almost anywhere else in the TCI you may wish to visit. Most travelers will need only a valid passport and a roundtrip/onward ticket before entering the country. Upon admittance, your passport will typically be stamped with a 30-day visitor’s visa which can be extended by limited 30-day increments at the Immigration Department office.

Turks and Caicos Residency

If after visiting this Caribbean paradise, you decide living in the Turks and Caicos Islands is for you, there are a few ways to go about obtaining residency.

The TCI Government does issue work permits, temporary residency permits, and Permanent Residency Status to qualifying foreign nationals. Those desiring to retire or live without working in the country may be better served by obtaining temporary residency or homeowner status by virtue of investment.

Qualifying investment amounts are as follows;

Temporary residency permit necessitates a minimum investment of $500,000 on Providenciales or West Caicos, or $250,000 on any of the other T&C islands. This permit must be renewed annually at a cost of $1,500.

Permanent Residency Status can be conferred after a significant investment in a home, business, or public-sector project. To obtain this type of PRC, you must pay a one-time fee of $25,000 and invest a minimum of $1,000,000 in a home or residence on Providenciales or $300,000 on any of the other T&C islands.
